"Yes and no. There are very different leadership styles and techniques, and some work in some instances and not in others. Patton and Gandhi were two of the best leaders the world has ever seen, but their leadership styles are clearly not interchangeable.
For me the best leadership training I've had was watching other managers throughout my career. Now as I lead teams I use what I have learned from my mentors and adapt them to my own style. I think you have to have complete faith in your abilities, and maybe even a little arrogance. But the most important key to a good leader is faith in an idea or goal, not your own advancement. Without fail, every person I've seen who tried a leadership position simply to get ahead in their career has failed." |

"Absolutely. Good leaders are not born, they're made. There are definitely some people who want to take charge and some people who don't, some people with self confidence and some without, but good leaders know the psychology of leadership - and that's something that needs to be learned.
Someone with natural leadership potential and charisma starts out with an advantage, so for these people leadership is easily learned.
Some people may just never have what it takes to lead by virtue of lacking intellect; but then again there are some political figures that suggest it's possible even then.
The best leadership training experience I had was taking on VP of membership for a ski club." |
